The UP Warriorz, a founding team in the Women's Premier League (WPL), are gearing up for a significant transformation as they approach Season 4 of the tournament. With the WPL Mega Auction on the horizon, the franchise has decided to retain only the promising young talent Shweta Sehrawat from the uncapped Indian category, according to an official announcement.
Notable Releases from the Team
Several prominent players have been released from the UP Warriorz roster, including captain Alyssa Healy, Deepti Sharma, Kranti Goud, Sophie Ecclestone, Grace Harris, Tahlia McGrath, and Alana King.
A New Direction with Coach Abhishek Nayar
The UP Warriorz, known for their entertaining gameplay over the past three years, have decided to take a new direction by appointing Abhishek Nayar as their head coach. Nayar, the first Indian to hold this position in the WPL, aims to usher in a new era for the franchise.
Strategic Planning for the Mega Auction
Having reached the playoffs in the inaugural season, the UP Warriorz will enter the mega auction with four Right to Match (RTM) cards available, which can be used for players from their 2025 roster. The team is focused on building a well-rounded and competitive squad that aligns with their values and aspirations for the upcoming season.
Franchise Leadership Discusses the Fresh Start
Head coach Abhishek Nayar commented on the changes, stating, "The UP Warriorz have had exceptional players in previous seasons, but as we embark on a new cycle in the WPL, it's crucial to initiate a fresh start. This doesn't mean we are closing the door on our past players; we are developing a new strategy and are optimistic that the WPL Mega Auction will enable us to reshape our squad effectively."
Kshemal Waingankar, COO of UP Warriorz, added, "This decision signifies a new beginning as we gear up for the upcoming season. Our budget and the Right to Match mechanism provide us with strategic planning opportunities, allowing our Head Coach, Abhishek Nayar, the flexibility to create the best possible team to compete for the title."
